The Pune police have arrested a man for allegedly carrying an electronic device and a cell phone in his underwear while appearing for a recruitment examination at the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) School and Centre, an establishment under the defence ministry, in Dhanori on Friday.
Police identified the man as Deepchandan Karambir (25), a resident of Barwala town in Hisar district of Haryana. ‘The accused has passed Class 12. A probe is on to find out whether he was planning to receive answers to the questions asked in the written examination through the mobile phone from someone outside the examination centre. We are seeking his custody from the court for further investigation,’ said assistant police inspector S S Mali.
Karambir appeared for the written examination for the post of vehicle mechanic. When he was checked by the personnel at the spot, he was found to be carrying an electronic device hidden in his pen cap, police said, adding that a cell phone was recovered from his underwear. It is suspected that he was carrying the electronic device and the phone for copying answers.
BRO officials handed over Karambir to the Vishrantwadi police for further investigation. Police arrested him under sections 420 (cheating) and 511 (attempting to commit an offence punishable with life or other imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code.
Since March, there have been at least four cases of dummy candidates appearing for various examinations at the BRO School and Centre. All these cases were also registered at the Vishrantwadi police station.
